Ray Bradbury (1920 - ). 1920 --
Writer; born in Waukegan, Ill. This Los Angeles-based writer secured a permanent reputation
with such works as The Martian Chronicles (1950) and Fahrenheit 451 (1953). Though best
known for more than a dozen volumes of science-fiction stories (The Illustrated Man (1951), A
Memory of Murder (1984)), he also wrote novels, drama, essays, and verse. His literary finesse
and social criticism did much to make science fiction respectable.
